*this poem was inspired by Li-Young Lee's "The Gift"
Sitting alone in the lunch room,
dreams of acceptance filling my head.
The desire to be liked,
to have another body to connect with,
in the simplest sense of the phrase.
Another day, another period of solitude.
Then a shadow was cast on the floor beside me,
little did I know who it belonged to.
Another body to connect with.
Years later, I sat at the round table
glancing at the lonely soul across the room.
I remembered the feeling of solitude,
and walked over to join our two bodies,
in the simplest sense of the phrase.
I like the composition of this poem. The way you tied the beginning with the end wrapped up the emotions of the poem nicely, forming them in sort of a circle. It left a lasting impression on me.
ReplyDeleteI can see how Lee inspired this poem. I like the idea of solitude vs. connection that you describe, it is an idea thought of often but not described this way often.
ReplyDeleteis that the same person you became friends again with?
ReplyDeleteNo, it's a different person.
